Fun Flying Fact Friday: The Rudder

Fun flying fact friday the rudder1

Well hold on, Neill … airplanes have rudders, is that where the Rudder Digital name came from?

Yes, it is! I’ve been asked before if it came from boating (today’s sub-fact: I actually get seasick really easily, so you won’t find me on boats often).

So what does the rudder actually do?

The rudder of an airplane is located on the tail (vertical stabilizer). Many people think the rudder steers the plane, but it doesn’t, the wings and ailerons do the real turning. The rudder’s job is to smooth out the turn, keeping the plane coordinated and comfortable.

On the ground, the rudder pedals steer the nose wheel, guiding the plane while taxiing. Also, the rudder is key in stall recovery to keep the aircraft from dropping into a spin, but we’ll save stalls for another post!

At Rudder Digital, that’s exactly how we think about websites. You may have flashy design “wings” and powerful “engines,” but without a steady rudder, speed, accessibility, SEO, your online presence gets bumpy fast. We help keep your digital flight smooth and steady.
